When I select a large amount of history entries and press delete, Firefox hangs for a while, but when I select the same amount of history entries and press delete and directly deselect by selecting only one history entry, deleting is extremely fast. It is slightly more complicated than that. Doing that will work only if Firefox is not opened. Firefox may well be opened during testing or fixing of the computer. If Firefox is opened it will create a new profile. Take care to make a note of the exact name of the original folder for comparison. The new profile will have a slightly different name.

Click the line that shows "Never Remember History". That will open a drop-down list. From that drop-down list you can select "Use custom settings for history". Remove the checkmark on "Always use Private Browsing mode". Close and restart Firefox when prompted.
